The University of British Columbia (UBC) jumped eight spots to rank No. 22 among 400 world universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University rankings, released October 6.
Those rankings purport to be the global gold standard for academic ratings and were developed in conjunction with Thomson Reuters and included input from more than 50 academic representatives from 15 countries across every continent.
The top ranked universities in the study were the California Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Stanford University.
The analysis includes 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities – from teaching and research to knowledge transfer.
The main categories were:
- teaching and the learning environment (worth 30% of the overall ranking score);
- research, including volume, income and reputation (30%);
- citations and research influence (30%);
- international outlook of staff, students and research (7.5%);
- industry income and innovation (2.5%).
In August, UBC ranked No. 37 in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankings of the top 500 universities worldwide.
