VPA to institute tougher trucker safety and environmental standards

Stricter container truck safety and environmental standards are coming to the Port of Vancouver.

Stricter container truck safety and environmental standards are coming to the Port of Vancouver.

The Vancouver Port Authority is implementing new standards beginning in July after a recent safety inspection by Delta police and the provincial Ministry of Transportation near Deltaport found that more than 45% or 114 of 250 container trucks failed minimum safety standards.

The new standards are aimed at reducing the use of unsafe container trucks moving goods to and from facilities administered by the port authority.

The VPA plans to work with the B.C. Trucking Association, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and ICBC's AirCare program in designing, implementing and enforcing the new standards.

In January, the port authority introduced more rigorous licensing, audit and enforcement provisions for container truck operations at the port.
