Canfor Pulp Ltd. is suing Andritz Inc. for $25 million in damages that occurred following internal explosions in a recovery boiler at Canfor’s Northwood mill after Andritz had allegedly “substantially and significantly upgraded and modified” the equipment in 2011.

Canfor filed a notice of civil claim in BC Supreme Court on May 23. The company claims Andritz’s bid for the upgrade was accepted with a contract price just above $9.1 million. The boiler upgrade, according to the claim, was to bolster the plant’s environmental protection by lowering sulphur emissions and to increase pulp production while reducing fuel consumption.

Canfor claims Andritz’s work on the boiler was defective. On May 25, 2012, the company claims the boiler suffered two internal explosions, significantly damaging the equipment. The pulp firm estimates the damages, losses and expenses associated with the explosions to be “in the range of $25 million.”

The allegations have not been proven in court and Andritz has not filed a response to the claim.
