What makes a great leader? Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor, says, “Having strong beliefs, being able to stick with them through popular and unpopular times, is the most important characteristic of a great leader.”

He should know. During his eight-year political run, Giuliani ushered in a new era of fiscal responsibility and broad-based growth, turning an inherited $2.3 billion budget deficit into a multibillion-dollar surplus and adding a record 450,000 private-sector jobs. He was also named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for leadership demonstrated in the days following 9-11.

Now, in his bestselling book “Leadership,” Giuliani shares lessons on principled leadership in the face of crisis and change and explains how anyone can put these simple concepts into practice in their own lives.

Want to learn more? Giuliani will be in Vancouver on September 30 to headline the Microsoft-sponsored Art of Leadership Conference. Billed as one of Canada’s top leadership and innovation events, the one-day conference will host more than 1,500 professionals at The Centre, at 777 Homer Street. Doors will open at 8 a.m., with Giuliani’s presentation and Q&A session at 4 p.m. The former NYC mayor will also be available for a meet-and-greet photo opportunity with platinum pass holders.

Also on the podium: Olympic gold medallist Hayley Wickenheiser. Credited with leading Canada to six gold and one silver medal at the Women’s World Hockey Championship, Wickenheiser – considered the best female hockey player in the world – will share advice on what a successful team needs and why great leaders must go above and beyond what others normally do. “A good leader,” she says, “never expects others to do what they wouldn’t do themselves.”

The Art of Leadership Conference will also feature Dan Roam, whose talk will focus on concepts from his bestselling book, “The Back of the Napkin: Solving Leadership Problems with Pictures,” and Vince Molinaro, managing director of the leadership practice within Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions in Toronto, who will present on how to fully commit to a culture of effective leadership and thoroughly accept and manage the operational workload required of an effective leader.

Rounding out the lineup, New York Times investigative reporter and author of “The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” Charles Duhigg will share insights on how to transform a crisis into exceptional leadership habits, lead teams in the directions that best reflect their strengths and handle change and reshape your team accordingly and effectively.
