Election 2024 Riding Brief: Vancouver-Kensington

This is one of 93 riding briefs that will be published ahead of the 2024 provincial election.
vancouver-ken
Vancouver-Kensington Electoral District
  • Current MLA: Mable Elmore, BC NDP (first elected in 2009)
  • Candidates:
    • BC NDP: Mable Elmore
    • BC United: Aronjit Lageri
    • BC Greens: None nominated yet
    • BC Conservative: Syed Mohsin
  • Description:
    • Formerly held (and lost) by Premier Ujjal Dossanjh, who presided over the BCNDP’s 2001 wipeout, the riding has returned to the orange fold after a one-term flirtation with the BC Liberals.
    • The riding is primarily centered around the neighbourhood of Kensington-Cedar Cottage. While boasting large immigrant populations from East, Southeast and South Asia, these tend to be more established, multifamily households.
    • In particular, the southeast end of the riding around Little Saigon has historically seen strength for the Liberals both provincially and federally.
    • Like many ridings in the eastern half of Vancouver, the main question is who finishes second. While the Conservatives have built strong inroads among South Asian communities south of the Fraser, it remains to be seen if they are be able to break through among other visible minority groups north of it.
  • Election 2020 Results (with 2024 boundaries):
    • BC NDP – 60%
    • BC Liberals – 28%
    • BC Greens – 12%
    • Other – 1%
