Election 2024 Riding Brief: Vancouver-Quilchena

This is one of 93 riding briefs that will be published ahead of the 2024 provincial election.
vancouver-quilchena
Vancouver-Quilchena Electoral District
  • Current MLA: Kevin Falcon, BC United (first elected in 2022)
  • Candidates:
    • BC NDP: None nominated yet
    • BC United: Kevin Falcon
    • BC Greens: None nominated yet
    • BC Conservatives: Dallas Brodie
  • Description:
    • With Wilkinson’s comfortable 28-point victory in 2020 and Falcon’s by-election triumph with just under 60% of the vote, this  riding was usually one of the safest for the BC Liberals.
    • The neighbourhoods of Dunbar, Arbutus Ridge, Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy will be bustling with doorknockers for the next few months as the Conservatives seek to defeat the man who spurned their leader.
    • The BC NDP retains pockets of support along East 16th and along 41st Avenue. Their task may not be so easy. Quilchena’s brand of conservatism is a more genteel sort, girded by its $3 million median dwelling values. Federally, it has been home to Liberal MPs who pulled off wins even against the Reform/Alliance waves of the ‘90s and the ‘00s—it even rejected the quieter federal conservatism of Stephen Harper.
    • The BC Conservative candidate, lawyer Dallas Brodie, fits the riding’s old money aesthetic quite well. Particularly interesting to watch will be Quilchena’s Chinese-Canadian community, which numbered 23,000 in 2021 and composes 40% of the entire riding’s population.
  • Election 2020 Results (with 2024 boundaries):
    • BC Liberals – 57%
    • BC NDP – 28%
    • BC Greens – 15%
