Election 2024 Riding Brief: Vancouver-Quilchena

This is one of 93 riding briefs that will be published ahead of the 2024 provincial election.
vancouver-quilchena
Vancouver-Quilchena Electoral District
  • Current MLA: Kevin Falcon, BC United (first elected in 2022)
  • Candidates:
    • BC NDP: Callista Ryan
    • BC Conservatives: Dallas Brodie
    • BC Greens: Michael Barkusky

  • Description:
    • With Wilkinson’s comfortable 28-point victory in 2020 and Falcon’s by-election triumph with just under 60% of the vote, this riding was usually one of the safest for the BC Liberals.
    • Home to outgoing BC United leader Kevin Falcon, Vancouver-Quilchena is now bereft of its traditional political party champion. Instead, Falcon’s Conservative opponent in the 2022 by-election, Dallas Brodie, has returned for a second kick at the can, all the while NDP candidate Callista Ryan aims to pull off an upset by swaying federal Liberals.
    • Dunbar, Arbutus Ridge, Shaughnessy, and Kerrisdale constitute the crème de la crème of the riding, while the NDP finds pockets of support along East 16th and 41st.
    • Brodie’s background as a lawyer fits the riding’s aesthetic quite well, while Ryan seeks to represent the UBC students residing in basement suites dotted across the riding. Of interest will be how Quilchena’s Chinese-Canadian population breaks—numbering 23,000 in the 2021 census and comprising 40% of the riding’s population, they could play an outsized role in determining the outcome.

  • Election 2020 results (with 2024 boundaries):
    • BC Liberals – 57%
    • BC NDP – 28%
    • BC Greens – 15%
