Election 2024 Riding Brief: Vancouver-Langara

This is one of 93 riding briefs that will be published ahead of the 2024 provincial election.
vancouver-langara
Vancouver-Langara Electoral District
  • Current MLA: Michael Lee, BC United (first elected in 2017)
  • Candidates:
    • BC NDP: Sunita Dhir
    • BC United: Jaime Stein
    • BC Greens: None nominated yet
    • BC Conservative: Bryan Breguet
  • Description:
    • Having been held by the BC Liberals since the riding’s creation, Vancouver-Langara is one of the two remaining seats in Vancouver held by BC United. With the retirement of star MLA Michael Lee, BC United will likely recede to a distant third. Expect a fierce race between the BC NDP and the BC Conservatives.
    • The riding is made up of three distinct neighbourhoods: Marpole, Oakridge and Sunset. The BCNDP is usually stronger in Sunset along Fraser Street, while BC United runs up the margins in affluent Oakridge. Elections are usually decided by Marpole, which harbours an eclectic mix of co-ops and condos. The key to any party’s victory is being able to bank enough votes in their strongholds as a buffer for their performance in Marpole.
    • Langara is the most diverse riding in the City of Vancouver, with visible minorities making up 79% of the population: 18% are South Asian, 38% are Chinese and 10% are Filipino. The Jewish community also has a significant presence in the riding, with various schools and community centres dotted throughout. The southern tip of the riding is home to a bustling transport and warehousing sector.
    • The riding is starkly polarized among regional lines. The string of co-ops south of West 70th Avenue leans heavily NDP compared to the area north of it.
  • Election 2020 Results (with 2024 boundaries):
    • BC Liberals – 46%
    • BC NDP – 44%
    • BC Greens – 8%
    • Other – 1%
